The Department of Food and Nutrition Services is seeking a part time or full time Cook to join our team.  The Chaparral House kitchen provides delicious and nutritious meals 3 times per day for our residents.

SHIFT TIMES:   6:00 AM TO 2:30 PM or 11:00am TO 7:30 PM


QUALIFICATIONS 

Ability to effectively communicate with superiors and co-workers as well as understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.  Training in preparation of foods in volume.  Must be able to provide evidence of valid CA Food Handlers Certificate within 3 months of hire.  High degree of personal cleanliness and hygiene.  Ability to work in close cooperation with others, give and accept directions from Supervisor in a constructive manner. Candidates must be fully vaccinated for Covid and have already had a first booster and either have already had a second booster or soon be second-booster eligible.

ESSENTIAL TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS JOB:

Standing and/or walking 70% or more, sitting 10-20%, frequent to very frequent bending, reaching, reaching overhead, lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs., pushing or pulling loads up to 75 lbs., and using/climbing step-stool or short ladder.


AM SHIFT DUTIES

Responsible for preparation of all food and service for breakfast meal and main entrees and sides for lunch meal.  Produces desserts for dinner meal and provides PM Dietary Aide of any special instructions, plating or other requirements needed before dinner service.  Provides assistance as required in all dietary functions as directed and instructed.  Cleans as scheduled or directed.

  • Produces all required diets for breakfast and lunch meals, to include therapeutic diets, texture altered meals and/or alternates for breakfast; and desserts for the dinner meal using standard recipes provided, and following guidelines for therapeutic meal preparation and service per menu.
  • Tallies menus in determining amount and type of food and supplies required for breakfast and lunch.
  • Serves Breakfast and Lunch meals, insuring that all trays for In-Room Service and Dining Room Plates are complete as indicated on Cooks Spreadsheet.
  • Serves and monitors these meals for in-room service and the main dining room in a safe and efficient manner; honoring resident preferences, and checking/comparing plated food with diet cards prior to serving.
  • Follows policy and procedures for safe storage all foods and beverages; covering and labeling food and beverages as directed.
  • Complies with established policies and procedures and sanitary standards; exercise proper care, use, cleaning and sanitation of food service supplies and kitchen equipment.
  • Checks incoming food and supplies upon delivery and assists with stocking storeroom using FIFO method and labeling.
  • Provides adequate, prompt and accurate assistance as directed in specific or general food service functions.
  • Complies with established abuse prevention, policies and procedures, infection control, facility fire safety, and sanitary standards of the Department and Chaparral House.
  • Attends scheduled in-service trainings, Chaparral House all-staff meetings and Department meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties as requested/directed by Supervisor.

PM SHIFT DUTIES

Assists AM Cook in preparation of all food and service for lunch meal and responsible for preparation of all food and service for dinner meal. Provides assistance as required in all dietary functions as directed and instructed.  Cleans as scheduled or directed.

  • Prepares alternate meals, salads and desserts for the lunch meal.
  • Assists in serving lunch.
  • Tallies menus in determining amount and type of food and supplies required for dinner meal.
  • Instructs Dietary Aides on preparation of alternate dinner meal requests and dinner desserts.
  • Prepares dinner meal per menu, using standard recipes provided, and following guidelines for therapeutic meal preparation and service.
  • Serves and monitors the dinner meal for in-room service and the main dining room in a safe and efficient manner; honoring resident preferences, and checking/comparing plated food with diet cards prior to serving.
  • Follows policy and procedures for safe storage all foods and beverages; covering and labeling food and beverages as directed.
  • Complies with established policies and procedures and sanitary standards; exercise proper care, use, cleaning and sanitation of food service supplies and kitchen equipment.

Pay Rates

  • Cooks who work the AM shift earn between $22.37 – $24.05 per hour. Pay rate is calculated based on years of service at Chaparral House.
  • Cooks who work the PM shift earn between $21.36 – $23.54 per hour. Pay rate is calculated based on years of service at Chaparral House.
